May 7th Update from Makalu

We are still at ABC, enjoying the sun in the morning and the warmth of the sleeping bag in the afternoon as it usually snows after 2pm. The team is good but getting a bit impatient and bored with sitting around at ABC. For me, the days here are actually quite useful. I am still chasing climbers for the Himalayan Database, chat to the climbers I know and I did an interview with the Swiss/South African explorer Mike Horn, which I wrote up for swissinfo.ch. So, there is always something to do but of course I would love to go higher up and eventually to the summit soon.

On Tuesday afternoon, Alix von Mele – Germany’s most successful female high altitude mountaineer – came for a cup of tea to our camp. It is great to exchange stories and find out what the other teams’ plans are – and by the sounds of it, it is all the same: “Hurry up and wait!”

I will try and send another update once we know what the weather is doing but by the looks of it we will probably not be going near the summit before mid May.

Thanks for following :-)

Hope the weather gods turn in your favor. As it happens, tomorrow night I’m going to a slideshow/lecture about climbing Makalu. Small world…

    Dear Billi
I love reading about your adventures – they keep me going!! Good luck and hope all goes well.

I am coming to Kathmandu in September as doing the Snowman Trek in Bhutan with Roland Hunter, so maybe if you are there, I can buy you a cuppa!!

    Love
